Verrazano Narrows Bridge VN80B

Staten Island, NY

This was a major long-term project for the TBTA (Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority). The top deck fabrication portion of the project included the robotic manufacturing of 938 unique orthotropic deck panels that averaged sixty feet long. Atema helped ensure quality fabrication contract compliance. Atema also contributed to the quality oversight for installation of the deck and is providing inspection review of the Fabricator’s coating after the first two years of service.

Atema was a key member of the New York oversight team, contributing in matters of quality consultation, relevant US standards training, US code interpretation and creating/facilitating implementation of RFI’s.

Throughout the project, a major goal was to keep the fabrication on par with American quality levels and compliance. Key focus includes relevant technical requirements and technical practices.

Atema engineers and quality specialists gave technical advice to the Fabricator to solve problems during contract execution during the material procurement, fabrication, welding, steel coating systems, NDT inspection and testing stages, as well as extensive use of PAUT (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing) managing five string encoder teams.

Atema was instrumental in providing communication assistance between CRSBG and their customer while keeping the project owner and other American staff informed.
